Both King Edward I of England and his wife Eleanor of Castile are direct descendants of Charlemagne. Lineage I (descent from Flanders), shows one line of Edward I's descent that is considered valid, as all of the parent-to-child relationships are confirmed by contemporary medieval sources.
Lineage II (descent from Vermandois and Anjou) is probably valid also, but it does contain one assumption - that Herbert II of Vermandois in generation VI is the son of Herbert I. Likewise, Lineage III (Descent from Vermandois and Capet), which is a side line to Lineage II, assumes that Beatrix of Vermandois is the sister of Herbert II, and therefore the daughter of Herbert I of Vermandois.
Although most historians agree that that these assumptions are correct, there is no confimation in the medieval records, which means some uncertainty exists as to the validity of both lines. Lineage IV (descent from Aquitaine) shows yet another line of descent for Edward I.
