As a teenager, Campanella showed a remarkable talent for baseball and quickly rose through the ranks of the Negro Leagues. In 1946, he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers and became the team's starting catcher.
Campanella quickly established himself as one of the best catchers in the game.
He was known for his powerful throwing arm and his ability to handle even the toughest pitchers. Over the course of his 10-year career, Campanella was named to the All-Star team eight times, won three National League MVP awards, and helped lead the Dodgers to five World Series appearances.
He was also a trailblazer off the field, becoming one of the first African American players to break the color barrier in Major League Baseball.
